FISHING 4 COMPLIMENTS
Lost In Good Intentions
Fishing 4 Compliments are a five-piece piece band based in the Huddersfield area and driven by the songs and voice of Eileen Alana. Seemingly rarely travelling far from home but with an output including a number of albums, they can be described as one of the counties hidden gems. As a general impression they offer up high-quality and engaging pop inflicted folk-rock, but to leave it at that will be to do a disservice to the range of influences that make themselves felt across the album, without ever becoming a tribute to their favourites. There is a gently reflective ambience to both the songs and the music tales of small-town life and relationship regrets. Besides the obviously folky aspects of the album, there are elements of funk and touches of country, including something of a hoedown as proceedings reach their conclusion. That’s not to say that they can’t rock more than a little gently when the mood takes them and the musicianship is of a high standard, but it is Eileen‘s voice that carries the songs, whether she is channelling 60s pop, showing us her soulful side, or elements of country it is just captivating throughout. A quick note of praise, not only for the music, but also for the production carried out by their near neighbours The Dunwells, who do know a thing or two about exciting a folk-rock audience!
A select band of Folk broadcasters have already picked up on the Fishies, and it would be nice to see more people follow suit and hopefully there will be further investigation by anyone intrigued by this review.
As a final note, a listening companion was moved to say that the whole album had a really summery feel to it, like running through a field of daisies. It’s hard to say fairer than that!!
